IB thermodynamics: Directions for using newsgroups


Document provided by the computing service, which I converted to HTML. The computing service tells me:

Students who need assistance with working out how to access the newsgroup should seek help from the people responsible for the particular computers they are using - that could be college or department computing staff, or for Computing Service facilities (e.g. the PWF) it would be the Computing Service help desk.

To place a message on the UCAM newsgroups you must first configure your mail user agent to access the UCAM newsgroup server (nntp-serv.cam.ac.uk) and then subscribe to the newsgroup you wish to post a message to

Instructions for subscribing are given according to your mail user agent, in other words how you read email (e.g. Pine, Outlook, Netscape, etc.), and according to where (Hermes, CUS):

Pine/CUS    Pine/Hermes    Outlook    Internet Explorer    Outlook Express    Netscape 7.0    Opera    Webmail, Mulberry, Eudora 5.1 and Pegasus Mail 3.1   

Pine/CUS

  1. Telnet to CUS and log in in the usual way.
  2. Enter 'pine' at the command prompt and press return
  3. Press 'S' to choose a set-up task then 'C' for config
  4. Press the down arrow three times so nntp-serv is highlighted
  5. Press 'A' for add value
  6. Type 'nntp-serv.cam.ac.uk' and press return
  7. Press 'E' for exit followed by 'Y' for yes to save changes
  8. Now enter the folder list, press the down arrow to enter News collection and press 'A' to subscribe to a newsgroup
  9. Enter 'ucam' and press return to see a full list of all UCAM newsgroups
  10. Use arrow keys to highlight required newsgroup and press 's' to subscribe
  11. Press return to enter selected newsgroup name
  12. The newsgroup can now be accessed by highlighting it and pressing return
  13. Press 'c' for compose, 'y' for yes to post to current newsgroup and then write your advert or message
  14. Press 'control-x' to send message to newsgroup

Pine/Hermes

  1. Telnet to Hermes and log in in the usual way
  2. Press return to continue followed by '1' for Pine
  3. Press 'S' to choose a set-up task then 'C' for config
  4. Press the down arrow three times so nntp-serv is highlighted
  5. Press 'A' for add value
  6. Type 'nntp-serv.cam.ac.uk' and press return
  7. Press 'E' for exit followed by 'Y' for yes to save changes
  8. Now enter the folder list, press the down arrow to enter News collection and press 'A' to subscribe to a newsgroup
  9. Enter 'ucam' and press return to see a full list of all UCAM newsgroups
  10. Use arrow keys to highlight required newsgroup and press 's' to subscribe

Outlook

  1. Start Outlook
  2. Click on View > Go To > News
  3. This launches the Outlook Newsreader
  4. Click on Tools > Accounts > News tab
  5. Click on Add > News
  6. Enter display name, click Next
  7. Enter email address, click Next
  8. Enter nntp-serv.cam.ac.uk in News server field, click Next
  9. Click Finish
  10. Click Close on the Internet Accounts window
  11. Click Yes on the Download newsgroups message
  12. Enter ucam in the 'Display Newsgroups which contain' field
  13. Highlight required newsgroup and click Subscribe
  14. Select additional newsgroups and subscribe or click on OK
  15. Click on newsgroup in folder list then click on New Post
  16. Compose message and click on Send

Internet Explorer

  1. Start I.E. and click on Tools > Mail and News > Read News
  2. Outlook Newsreader starts
  3. Click on Tools > Accounts > News tab
  4. Click on Add > News
  5. Enter display name, click Next
  6. Enter email address, click Next
  7. Enter nntp-serv.cam.ac.uk in News server field, click Next
  8. Click Finish
  9. Click Close on the Internet Accounts window
  10. Click Yes on the Download newsgroups message
  11. Enter ucam in the 'Display Newsgroups which contain' field
  12. Highlight required newsgroup and click Subscribe
  13. Select additional newsgroups and subscribe or click on OK
  14. Click on newsgroup in folder list then click on New Post
  15. Compose message and click on Send

Outlook Express

  1. Start Outlook Express and click on Tools > Account > News tab
  2. Click on Add > News
  3. Enter display name, click Next
  4. Enter email address, click Next
  5. Enter nntp-serv.cam.ac.uk in News server field, click Next
  6. Click Finish
  7. Click Close on the Internet Accounts window
  8. Click Yes on the Download newsgroups message
  9. Enter ucam in the 'Display Newsgroups which contain' field
  10. Highlight required newsgroup and click Subscribe
  11. Select additional newsgroups and subscribe or click on OK
  12. Click on newsgroup in folder list then click on New Post
  13. Compose message and click on Send

Netscape 7.0

  1. Start Netscape and click on the Mail button or click on Window > Mail and Newsgroups
  2. The Netscape mail user agent should start
  3. Click Edit > Mail and Newsgroup account settings > Add Account
  4. Click on Newsgroup Account and click Next
  5. Enter your name and email address, click Next
  6. Enter nntp-serv.cam.ac.uk in the Newsgroup Server field, click Next
  7. Enter a name for the newsgroup account (or just leave as nntp-serv.cam.ac.uk) and click Next then Finish then OK to close the Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings panel
  8. Highlight nntp-serv.cam.ac.uk (or what-ever you called your newsgroup account in step 7) in left hand pane
  9. Click Subscribe to newsgroups in right hand pane
  10. Type ucam in Show items that contain dialogue box but don't press return
  11. Either tick required newsgroups (in Subscribe column) and click OK or highlight required newsgroups and click Subscribe
  12. Messages can now be posted to a newsgroup by selecting the required newsgroup and clicking Compose
  13. Once the message has been written click on Send

Opera

  1. Start Opera and click on News > Read
  2. Click Yes on "Would you like to set up a news server?" message
  3. Enter nntp-serv.cam.ac.uk in News Server field and click OK
  4. Click the All button above the folder list
  5. Click the ucam folder in the left hand pane
  6. Click the ucam sub-folders to reveal the required newsgroup
  7. Enter the required newsgroup
  8. Click Compose
  9. Once the message has been written click on Send

Webmail, Mulberry, Eudora 5.1 and Pegasus Mail 3.1

These have no news server options so can not be used to view newsgroups.
